Water Well Project in Malawi

Project Details

The Need

Malawi has been greatly impacted by the longrunning El Niño drought in Southern Africa. Since 80% of the population is employed in agriculture, the effects of the drought are particularly pervasive. According to a recent Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report, the undernourished population has risen to 6.7 million, 3.5 million of whom are children.

Charity: water’s local partner, World Vision has increased their water and sanitation hygiene (WASH) programs since 2011, with their “Campaign for Every Child.” This campaign was founded on their belief that every child deserves clean water. World Vision Malawi works with communities to prevent diarrhea and other waterborne diseases, particularly for children under five, through the construction of drilled wells, piped systems, and sanitation facilities. Over the next four years, World Vision Malawi aims to directly impact 1.5 million boys and girls across the country with improved WASH access.

The Solution

Drilled wells have a lot of moving parts, but the main components include a pumprod that gathers water into the wells, a rising pipe and rising main where water travels upwards via the pressure of the pump, and an Afridev pump, which is the driving force that brings the water to ground level and to the spout for communities to access.
